The Skyway Creative Writing Competition sponsored by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference has recently announced the winners of the 2023 Creative Writing Competition, and the results are astounding.
We are proud to announce that this year, Prairie State College had three winners, more than any other school in the conference. Way to go, Pioneers!
The Skyway Collegiate Conference hosts annual student competitions to highlight the best artists and writers from eight community colleges in the Chicagoland area. While Prairie State has participated in this competition for several years, this year PSC dominated the competition with two first place winners, and one second place winner – more than any other school in the conference.
One of the first place recipients, Daniel Carbaugh, won first place in the fiction category for his story “The Call.” The judges even offered to publish the story in “The Write City Review,” an established literary journal published by the Chicago Area Writers Association every two years.
Rodolpho Meza won second place in the drama/screenplay category for his play, “Love, Melody.“
Tegan Baez won first place in the poetry category for his prose-poem, “Meal Prep.”
When asked in an interview with Tegan Baez how he felt after winning, he said that he felt “honored for the award,” and was completely “surprised” at his victory. Tegan states that he entered the competition simply for fun and to “take a step of faith.” This step of faith resulted in him getting first place in the poetry competition!
Baez plans to major in Library Science and plans to become a librarian in the future. Tegan states that he hopes to continue writing and wants to express his creative side in everything he does.
Congratulations once again to our winners! Be sure to check out their pieces in our “Showcase” section.
