With light refreshments, an open and honest environment, and a good film, PSC’s communication honor society, Sigma Chi Eta, is set to host Movie Days throughout the semester.
On Feb. 24 at 2:30 p.m. in room 2502, the honor society will be showcasing the film “Moonlight”. Directed by Barry Jenkins, according to IMDB, the film is about an African-American man who “grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.”
For Sigma Chi Eta Activities Director Gabriel Rosas, “Moonlight” is “a very intimate story about becoming comfortable with yourself when it feels like all other factors are, kind of, forcing you in another direction.” Upon watching the 2016 film, Rosas “really realized that filmmaking can be used for more than just entertainment. It can be used to convey a message and to showcase different experiences.”
The next Movie Days would be on March 24 and a double-feature on May 7, both to start at 2:30 p.m. The dates and times are subject to change and movie showings will be revealed soon.
After the large student attendance in last semester’s film and discussion of “Talk to Me”, the honor society decided to continue with the events for this semester. In doing so, they hope to not only spread the word of what Sigma Chi Eta is, but also bring students together and discuss films.
“Communication skills are necessary and applicable in almost every way and there’s nothing more universal than storytelling. [On Movie Day] we watch, learn, discuss and interact with media together in a welcoming and open space,” Sigma Chi Eta President Rebecca Metellus said in an email.
Similarly, Rosas believes that “the purpose of Movie Days, really, is to give an opportunity for students to come together, discuss filmmaking as an art form and discuss how filmmaking is used as a means of communication for telling different stories from diverse backgrounds.”
Sigma Chi Eta is the Prairie State College chapter for the communication honor society. As a club, the honor society attempts to bring students together to acknowledge the significance of communicating effectively as well as build these skills. While there are a few requirements to join, the club is accepting new members to become the new club leaders when the current leadership board graduates this semester.
